Are you a bioinformatician and would you like to contribute to the Public Health in the Netherlands? Are you interested in infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness and research? Do you want to make a lasting impact with your work in the prevention and/or control of infectious diseases in the future? If yes, then this bioinformatician position is made for you.
The department
The Centre for Infectious Diseases Research, Diagnostics and Surveillance (IDS) plays a major role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in The Netherlands. It does this by coordinating the nation-wide surveillance of infectious pathogens such as Sars-Cov-2 (COVID-19) and mycobacterium tuberculosis, by performing outbreak investigations for example for bacterial food infections and by advancing multiple lines of research related to microbiology and public health.
Goals and ambitions of this position
We are looking for a bioinformatician to join our team to help develop solutions, including genomics-pipelines and in general software components for laboratory data analysis, data processing and data presentation for public health. With this in mind, we would like our future colleague to have experience in using bioinformatics tools for sequence analysis, building pipelines, structuring, managing and analyzing data and having strong communication, problem-solving and project- and time-management skills. The team currently consists of four bioinformaticians and one data expert/project manager. Besides that, you and the team act as spiders in the web and you will work in close collaboration with other bioinformatics experts, DevOps engineers, microbiologists, epidemiologists and other researchers throughout the RIVM.
OptionalFor the more experienced bioinformatician who wants to apply, a role as project coordinator belongs to the possibilities. For this, we are looking for a person who is also able to manage and coordinate multiple (>10) projects within the group.
Tasks and daily activities

- Proactively participate in internal and external projects.
- Advice and support other researchers about bioinformatics solutions that are helpful for their projects. Together with our other project manager, collect requirements for future projects.
- Report scientific and not scientific results to managers, other researchers and potentially in scientific publications.
Additional tasks for project coordinator
- Manage and coordinate the group with the help of the other project manager. This includes hosting group meetings and being the contact person for the bioinformatics group, give support with budgeting, project planning and analysis of our capacity.
